Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator work for any country?

Yes. The calculation of value-added tax (VAT, GST or other names) follows the same logic: type the rate that applies in your country (between 0 and 100%) and the tool breaks down net, tax and total.

How is the net amount calculated from the gross price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + t/100), where t is the rate. For example, with 21%: net = gross / 1.21. If the gross is 121, the net is 100 and the tax is 21. The calculator does this automatically when you fill in the gross field.

Do I have to pick 21%, 10% or another fixed value from a dropdown?

No. The interface has a text field for the rate: you type the exact rate (for example 20, 10, 4 or 7.5). There is no dropdown with preset rates.

Is the VAT calculator free?

Yes, it is included in Office Tools' free Starter plan. Create a free account to use it in your browser, with no software to install.

Can I start from the gross total including tax?

Yes. Fill in the gross field and you'll see the net amount and the tax instantly. You can also start from the net and get the tax and total.

What does the screen include besides the VAT block?

A scientific calculator on the same page (√, x², percentages, 1/x, chained operations), useful to review amounts before or after the tax.
